Hi Matthew,

You did a very good job at describing the tension between what employees are expecting from using wikis, and what an organization needs to do to keep people and knowledge on track. Thanks for sharing, I have forwarded this article to decision-makers at my workplace.

BTW, if you're interested, I wrote a report on using wikis in education last year. It touches some of the same issues, from a different perspective. Here's the URL: http://udel.edu/~mathieu

Hi Matthew...this article is really insightful. We are currently considering the rollout of an enterprise-wide wiki. Discussions are currently focused on how to make available the various information out there. Should there be a single enterprise wiki, various community wikis that rollup, or a hybrid of both? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Matthew, this is an excellent post. I'll share with you and your readers a similar post I penned here: http://www.gilyehuda.com/2009/03/26/e2ord2/

I think we will eventually clarify the marketplace and use cases to rationalize:
1. enterprise-wide transparency
2. departmental-wide unity
3. team-wide coordination
4. project-wide activity (which may or may not be the same as team)
5. individual productivity enhancement tools (profile, streams, bookmarks, etc.)

Do you think these are right?

Amy, I'm afraifd I've gotta give the standard answer for your question: "It depends". How tightly coupled are the people and work groups within the organisation? If they identify closely with each other then a single wiki may do. But if there are many diverse groups that don't relate to each other, then give them each a wiki. It's probably a good principle to let the wiki structures reflect the org structures. On the other hand, maybe you want to use the wiki as a way of drawing people closer together. Placing information in a single location can be a way to foster a stronger sense of being a single enterprise.

Mathieu: Your report touches on a lot of ground. I appreciated the educational comments about things like instructional strategies and grading. Figures 4 and 5 -- what I call "security onions" -- are very simple and effective visualisations of different access structures. I also liked the STOLEN principle and think you should write something about that on wikipatterns.com. --Matt.

Good summary of your experience, most others I've seen are sanitized.

Rocket appears to have the capability to turn the sometimes tired approach to Wikis, or prescibed blogging, inside out.
Why not automate the posting to the Wiki and remove the people?
While this may seem silly as it removes the 'collaborative' component, it saves time and stress and you will be able to add virtually all of the value after the posting with a tag or meta data or sticky note approach.

Then you put the values in a datacube and allow users to navigate in multi-dimensional space.
Simple enough, I've been prescribing this approach for two years.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Nick

Tanks Mattew! Just a question in wikimatrix there is a lot of choice. Can you suggest some name of open soucre products that are consistent with the specification you gave in the article for corporate wiki? Thank you again!
