I'm wondering if we could go even one more step before Problem-Understanding? Perhaps even a conceptual process for locating a problem...not just identifying symptoms. The reason I bring this up is I've been in meetings where I had a diagram to help with the understanding of the problem, but only to discover that the problem I was stating was really a symptom of higher-order problem.

"I'm wondering if we could go even one more step before Problem-Understanding? Perhaps even a conceptual process for locating a problem"

Interesting thought, but I'd be careful proposing that to clients. "You mean you want to figure out how we're going to figure this stuff out?" I have nightmares where I find myself saying things like "this is really a higher-order problem" in front of clients...sort of like pointing out that their business strategy doesn't actually incude making money.

Re: the "can't the tabs be green" discussion: I think IA and ID needs to develop methods that accomodate that kind of client behavior; it's just not going to go away no matter how patiently you explain things. Surely graphic designers have been dealing with this problem for hundreds of years, no?
