Article Idea:
Rethinking Task Analysis and Modeling
suggested by chuck kukla on 2008/06/11
By adding only four additional pieces of data to the traditional ways of task modeling, work flowing modeling or process modeling will result in a better way of evaluating interface design in a more holistic way.
A more holistic model of work will result in developing more relevant use-cases and identify important contextual features that will be present in some cases and not in others.
This idea is related to the other two ideas I have posted in this forum.

I think this is a great idea. It will become more important as we need to consider mobile-based solutions

Chuck,
I find the topic and the description you provided intriguing. I may be working on a topic which is very similar. One of the struggles I have had is how to get project stakeholders to think outside of the screen, and to look at how users perform work while interacting with the tools in their work environment. I have been working on a method to help project stakeholders take environmental considerations into account, which should lead to a more usable interface. Does this sound similar to what you are working on?

Yes, environmental considerations are some of the factors that could be addressed. One of the problems we have seen in organizations are that plans used to define and direct the work are only loosely related to those plans used to build the workplace. With multiple and fragmented plans environmental factors can not be directly related to output and hence are often dismissed as not relevant. In addition, plans used to guide the work and plans used to define the necessary supports often do not resemble the plans-in-action (how people actually work). The consequence of this is that corrective action is either off target or late.
