Article Idea:
Geert Hofstede's Dimensions of Culture
suggested by Tomasz Neugebauer on 2008/07/02
Geert Hofstede defined cultural dimensions based on his study of IBM employees in more than 70 countries in the 60s and 70s. The cultural dimensions defined through his analysis have been validated by subsequent studies and applied to interface evaluation and design. I propose an article that summarizes the theoretical foundations for his cultural dimensions as well as the attempts to apply these cultural dimensions to the evaluation and design of interfaces.

Sounds interesting. I personally would also like to read about the phenomenon that many people feel more connected to peers in foreign countries that to their neighbors next door. This could mean that we might need a different approach that we could use in the 60s, especially when we are targeting tech people.

I think this would be fascinating. I don’t often see discussion of how a user’s cultural disposition affects his or her experience of a system, rather we tend to focus on a particular person’s short-term goals, evident technical acumen, and demographic background – factors of infinite variance within a single culture. Looking instead at the pervasive influence of cultures as a whole and how interfaces work within them should be a refreshing subject.
