Like you said, the “secret” is to annotate what *needs* to be annotated, to keep it crystal-clear and remember your audience.

One quick tip: I do my wireframes in Visio and put my annotations on a separate layer. Thus it’s easy to print the ‘frames with or without the notes. That’s especially nice when using the wireframes for paper usability testing or interactive prototyping.

Typically or mostly a Business Analyst or a Functional analystalso annotates the wireframes (; especially for big projects) since they can better explain the ‘why’ by tying it to the requirements.
We used InDesign in the last project for annotations and it works great too…
